Some memories never fade, no matter how many years pass.
For her, it wasn’t a birthday, a school event, or a family celebration. It was a quiet afternoon when she found herself alone at home, feeling hungry.
Everyone had gone out, saying they would return soon. At first, she didn’t mind waiting. But as the afternoon stretched on, hunger slowly replaced patience. She walked into the kitchen, hoping to find something ready to eat. There wasn’t.
She stood there for a moment.
Then a simple thought crossed her mind.
“Why don’t I cook something myself?”
She was still a young girl. Cooking had never been her responsibility. She had occasionally helped in the kitchen by washing vegetables or handing over an ingredient, but she had never prepared a meal on her own. Living with partial vision meant she always took a little extra time to recognise things, but she already knew where most of the essentials were kept.
She opened the vegetable basket and found a few potatoes.
“Potatoes will do,” she thought with a smile.
The only challenge was the gas stove.
She had never learned how to light it.
After looking around for a while, she found a small piece of paper, lit it carefully, and used its flame to ignite the burner. The blue flame came alive.
Now there was no turning back.
She peeled the potatoes slowly, taking her time with every cut. Some pieces were larger than others, but that didn’t bother her. She added oil to the pan, waited patiently, and dropped the potatoes in. The gentle crackling sound made her step back for a moment before carefully stirring them again.
She reached for the familiar spice containers, bringing each one closer before adding a pinch. There were no measuring spoons, no written recipe, and no one standing beside her to tell her what to do.
Only curiosity.
And determination.
As the potatoes cooked, a familiar aroma began filling the kitchen.
Every few minutes she wondered whether they were ready. She picked up a small piece, waited for it to cool, and tasted it.
Not yet.
A few more minutes.
Finally, she switched off the stove, served herself a small plate, and took the first bite.
The potatoes weren’t perfect.
They could have used a little more salt.
Some pieces were softer than others.
But to her, they tasted wonderful.
Not because they were delicious.
Because she had cooked them herself.
That simple afternoon quietly changed something inside her.
She realised she didn’t always have to wait for someone else to take care of her.
Years passed, but she never stopped cooking. One recipe led to another, and every meal taught her something new. Her confidence grew with every dish she prepared, and one day she fulfilled a dream she had carried for years—she opened a small restaurant.
For some time, people came there to enjoy home-style meals prepared with care and warmth. It was more than a restaurant. It was proof that a little girl who once struggled to light a gas stove had found her place in the kitchen.
Life, however, has its own recipes.
Financial difficulties eventually forced her to close the restaurant. It was heartbreaking, but it did not erase everything she had achieved. The restaurant closed, but her love for cooking never did.
Even today, whenever someone asks about the first dish she ever cooked, she doesn’t remember the recipes she later perfected or the meals she served to others.
She remembers those simple potatoes.
Because that was the day she discovered that confidence sometimes begins with the simplest meal.
And every great journey in the kitchen starts with a first dish.
